Both deliverables and indicators in Folio allow you to compare the responses to checklists against set targets/thresholds, and then report on these results. However there are some key differences between the two features that make it preferable to use one over the other depending on the requirement.

When to use Deliverables
- Deliverables need to be linked to a single Folio in order to be used, so if a checklist does not need to be attached to an associated Folio, or perhaps can be attached to multiple Folios, then Indicators should be used.
- Deliverables performance criteria are set up on an organisational level. So thresholds for overperformance and underperformance are the same for every Deliverables checklist, but do not need to be set up every time you add a new question to the checklist.
- Targets for the checklist are set up on an assignment level. So if the targets for a question vary depending on the organisation responsing to the checklist Deliverables should be used.
- Deliverables allow for a further breakdown of the responses on a program and/or location level. So if you need the data collection and reporting on a more granular level than Deliverables should be used.
- Deliverables allow for accumulation of results over several repeats of the checklist. So if you have a checklist that is reporting results every quarter Deliverables allow you to report on the responses for that quarter as well as the responses to date.
When to use Indicators
- Indicators have no restraints on being linked to a Folio. So for example if you have a provider with several contracts with your organisation, you can attach the same Indicator checklist to every contract.
- Indicators performance criteria are set up on a question level. This lets you vary the thresholds for overperformance and underperformance on every question. So for example if you have one question where overperformance is good, and another where overperformance is bad in the same checklist, it is better to use Indicators.
- Targets for the checklist are set up on a question level. So if the targets for a question are the same regardless of the organisation answering the question Indicators should be used.
